BOROUGH COUNCILS.
RICCARTON. The fortnightly meeting of the Riecarton Borough Council was held laat evening, when there were present the Mayor (Mr J. Brown) and Crs W. Helliwell, «T, Dempster, G. D. White, T. J. Stokes, E. J. Foster, T. Waddell, and A. D. Ford. REPORTS. ■■■■■■ The financial statement showed receipts since last meeting amounting to £279 3/2 and expenditure amounting to £221 16/5. The accounts showed balances as follow:—District fund, credit of £3OB 16/4; loan, debit of £1 1/11. The Finance Committee also reported that it had insured the Town Hall and offices against fire, and that a policy had been taken out en the furniture. — The report was adopted. The Works Committee reported that the work of shingling Alliance Street had been completed, as also the forming of Park Lane.—The report was adopted. MAYOR'S STATEMENT. The Mayor, in his verbal statement, reported that when in Wellington last week he had interviewed the Railway Department in connection with the matter of the proposed footpath along the railway line from Hagley Road to Riccarton Road, and had. been informed that the agreement was -nearly ready and would be forwarded on completion, probably within a few weeks, when the work of forming the path would be proceeded with. The Mayor also stated that Mr Witty was making further enquiries in regard to the telegraph office for Riccarton. CORRESPONDENCE> The Riccarton Burgesses' Association wrote in regard to their renting one of the rooms in the Town Hall in which to hold their meetings.—-The matter was referred to the Hall Committee. SUMNER. A meeting of the Sumner Borough Council was held last evening, there being present: —The Mayor ,(Mr 6.. W. C. Smithson), Crs Boulton, Brewer, Stuart, Rankin, Wood, and the Hon. J. Barr. s Messrs Thomas Edward Whitfield and Morgan Laurenson were sworn in' as members to fill the vacancies created by the resignations of Crs Hill and Preston. The town clerk reported that during the past four weeks building permits had been issued to the value of £74o* making a total of £7344 since Apstf 1 last. The total for the same period last year was £5387. JX Was also reported that difficulty was being experienced in collecting the amounts due by holders of huts at Taylor's Mistake, and it was decided to post notices at Taylor's Mistake with regard to this matter. The Works Committee recommended that a four-inch well be put down at the corner of Estuarj l " Road, Redeiil£s, to augment the present available supply of water. It was decided to elect a sub-committee to call tenders for this. The receipts on the district fund account amounted to £292 11/5, and the expenditure to £504 4/3. The receipts
on the gasworks revenue account wer» £l.lß 5/11, and . the expenditure -was £lO5 16/1. Accounts amounting to £941 17/8 wer» passed for payment. The gas manager reported, that the' number of consumers was still increasr ing, and' that there was only ; £1 outstanding for gas during the month of , ■ July. The report, which was received,' was considered very favourable. , . ,! CORRESPONDENCE. \ >The Sumner Beautifying Association wrote asking if the council would han% over the piece of vacant land at the foot of Clifton- Road for beautifying pnj-, . poses.
