THE AMBERLEY RACES.
THS SOCIAL SIDE. The stock remark at the Amberley Races on Saturday was "What a pity it isn't a day like yesterday." Friday, it will be remembered, was so delightfully spring-like that it needed only a little stretch of imagination to hear th? pipes of Paii in woodland places; Saturday, on the other hand, was the wind \s day out, and how it blew and blustered and raved about the pretty little district of Amberley only those who were present can imagine. A remark was overheard to the effect that it was almost enough to blow the horses off the course, and the speaker gave it, in all seriousness, as the reason why the horse he ha 1 backed failed to pass the winning post first! Nevertheless there was a good attendance, and a perfect battalion of motor cars was ranged up in double lines inside the fence, from whence the owmss watched the various events. A good many were owned by Christchurch folk, .who were intrepid enough to make the trip in the very teeth of the nor'wester. There were numerous picnic luncheon parties, in which the juveniles, who were brought along for the outing,
