While returning last night from the city to Addington Camp, Matthew Gallagher, aged 28 years, a member of B Squadron, Mounted Rifles, fell from a tram car and sustained a fracture of the base of the skull. He died while being conveyed to the hospital. The car — a special camp car—left the Square at 9..'!2 p.m., and it was when proceeding along Colombo Street, three minutes later, that the accident occurred. The car, which has a seating capacity of 40, was carrying .'>9 passengers, all but three 6f whom were in uniform. The deceased was not identified last evening. He was wearing a belt marked "Irwin," but the article proved to be one that had been called in and reissued. Gallagher, who previously resided at Sydenham, was employed by Mr T. H. Davis, painter, of Colombo Road, Sydenham, in whose employ he had been for the last ten years. He was a single man, and his relatives reside at Prebbleton. Arrangements are being made to accord the deceased a military funeral.
