BALACLAVA HELMETS.
An article calculated to be of great service to soldiers going to war is the Balaclava helmet. The committee of the Lady Liverpool Pund have a number of these in hand, but a great many more are required. A helmet can be made by a knitter of ordinary rapidity ,4n a day. At the. request of the committee the following description of how to knit them is published:— Three ounces .3-ply alloa, or i'.-ply pet: tic oat yarn, 1. pair No. 0 needles; cast oh 72 stitches and knit in ribs, :» plain, '■', purl, for .'55 rows; knit 57 stitches still in ribs, turn and knit 42. There are now 15 stitches left unkuitted at each end of-needle. Put these on two safety pins, as they will not be wanted for some time. Now knit on in ribs for ,16 ovw-4. tlien fl+art shaping the head. Knit in rmN .*'.!) stitches, leaving i> at end; turn and'knit .'s6', leaving 3; knit ;>.'!, leaving 6; knit I>o, leaving G; knit 21 6 ; leaving 9; knit 24, leaving 9; knit 21, leaving 12, knit 18, leaving 12; knit 15, leaving 15; knit 12, leaving 15; knit 9, leaving IS; knit 6, leaving 18. Next row knit in ribs to end and pick up 18 stitches down side of headpiece (as" in heel of stocking). Turn and knit in ribs, beginning with .*{ purl, to end of row, and pick up 18 stitches at this side of headpiece; turn and knit as for shaping head as before, only beginning with 3 purl, leaving ,'{ stitches at .end for two rows; then 6 stitches for one row; and so on till 18 stitches left at ei.l of each needle; then turn and knit to end of row and pick up the 15 stitches left on safety pin. Turn again and knit i>. end, picking the 15 on the other safety pin. There are now 108 stijtches. Kr.it ! 24 rows and cast off ; under ehjin. '
