WELLINGTON, August 1. "The threatening weather conditions yesterday caused" much pessimism as to the prospects for the morrow, when the chief hockey, event of the.season was .to take place, but this morning broke fully fine, and the English ladies' team' opened" its • tour auspiciously in kings' weather. ' Their invasion lias" created muchiiinterest locally, and this reached a climax'when the visitors exploded their first bomb, against the Wellington chosen Basin. Eeserve this afternoon in 'the" presence of over 4000 spectators. «". :'i-'-/:'. • '- ' ;■

'->. England won the toss and were soon in the opposing circle, but the local girls changed" the "scene of operations.' Each time they advanced, however, the visitors' backs were sound, and sent the ball to their forwards. Within five minutes .of the start *a •forward rush ended in Miss M. Eames opening the score for England.- ~ ."•""" Shortly afterwards Miss Gaskill added another;. 2—o. The visitors exhibited a far better knowledge of the game, both in attack and defence,-and their combined work was really commendable. Play for the most part remained in Wellmgton territory. . After repeated attempts, Miss Gaskill added the third:goal.: .

This instilled more life into the Wellington, girls, who soon reached the visitors .? circle, where Miss Wetherall (the goalkeeper) f*i.ved a shot> and the ball was taken to the other end Of the field, where Miss Leacrdft scored. A brief Wellington attack was relieved and a combined forward rush ended in Miss Eames finding the net. s—o. Wellington tried hard to open their tally, but in vain. The blue and black backs were nevertheless putting in good work, and time and again prevented businesslike rushes. Miss Maedonnell, the local right wing, who was particularly prominent, changed play to the visitors' territory, but the opportunity to score was lost. Wellington were no-\v showjing up to better advantage, but the' half-time. whistle sounded without any further score. , Second Spell. . Upon resuming Wellington livened up considerably, and the visitors were compelled to* concede two corners in quick succession. - The -English girls' defento\yas sound and they, were soon attacking, but not for long. The yellow aad black rearguard sent the forwards away, and the visitors' ..goalkeeper was called upon to'save. This she .did; and the visitors were again put on the aggressive, Miss.Eoadley saving a shot..Misses Lang ahd Pickering were putting in good work. for. the local girls, but they could not, penetrate the sound defence of their'opponents. In a red and white attack, Miss Gaskill found -an opening and sent.the ball home: 6—o.

■ Not disheartened, the Wellington girls made an advance oh the opposing goal, but. the effort was fruitless, and England we're again attacking. Before long Miss Gaskill added the visitors' seventh, goal., Still they persisted, and several attempts to. score were of no avail. Miss McDonnell then changed the scene, of" operations, and got to .the visitors' circle, where Miss Pickering shot wide. The visitors' soon returned, and eventually Miss Gaskill again demonstrated her. worth as a goal-getter by shooting past Miss Roadley: 8 — : 0. ,'To this Wellington replied by a determined attack, and a great cry went up when Miss Carrick sent the ball into the net; Imt, on account off-side p;lay,^tlie, goal was not allowed. In attempting to prevent a rush Miss Newmann, the local left full-back collided with another player and was incapacitated for a few minutes. After a brief visiting attack, Wellington made another determined effort to score, but Miss Lang shot wide. The visitors were attacking when time sounded.
