Response, surprisingly general, has been forthcoming with respect to the appeal made for funds to establish open-air accommodation for children. Such an

appeal, coming on top of other demands on the pockets of the public, depends for its success on the organisation of district committees behind winch are bands of willing workers. Before the campaign was formally opened, care was taken by those responsible for the general arrangements to make the movement as comprehensive as possible. Districts were planned out, and controls, established, with the result that a steady stream of gold has flowed into the common fund. The matter of giving the scheme a sharp lift has been taken in hand by the Christehurch Commercial Travellers' Club, whose members have arranged a gala day for next Saturday. These "gentlemen of the road" have set about their self-imposed task with an enthusiasm at once stimulating and pregnant of much good. In return for the unique entertainment which has been in careful preparation for some time past, the comedians for this excellent cause will expect an amused public—the amusement is guaranteed—to make some contribution to the boxes of the collectors who will play the good old highwayman 's game of "hold-ups." If the gala is fortunate to fit in with genial weather, there should be no doubt as to its success. We suggest to the Mayor, and his many earnest assistants, that a special effort to swell fund! should be made during Grand National Week. At that time, the city is crowded with people from outside, down for the racing and trotting meetings, and if the proposition was placed before these visitors in an attractive form there would surely be a generous response.
