Mr H. W. Taylor (Auckland)-arrived In Christchurch yesterday. Mr J. G. Rutherford( Dunedin) "is at. present on a visit to Christchurch.. Mr F. H. Smith, MJV arrived in Christehurch yesterday from Wellington. .
Hohs. H. F. Wigram, C. Louisson, and Sir Charles Bowen arrived from Wellington this morning. . <- . . Mr W. Howard Booth, of Carterton, will'judge the Southdowns at the Canterbury Show in November. Messrs R. Evatt, F. Barker, P. Stewart, and D. C. Peacock, of Wellington, are at present visiting Christchurch.
Mr F. Pirani,' who met with a serious accident recently, is progressing favourably in a Feiiding private hospital. Mr J. M. Donald, of Dunedin, is at present on a visit to Christchurch, and is staying at the United Service Hotel. Mr, A. D. Kaye, late of the Besses o' the Barn Band, has taken over the conductorship of the Invercargill Dominion Band.
Advice has been received that Sir James Mills has been appointed director of the London Board of the Bank of New Zealand, in succession to ...the late Mr R. H. Glynn.
Mr. J. K. Macfie, hon. secretary of the Dunedin branch of the Oveaseas Club, and hon. secretary of the New Zealand Council of the Club, arrived in Christchurch this morning from Wellington.
The death is announced at Napier of the Bev. Dr Sidey, aged 87. Deceased was for many years minister in charge q£ the Napier Presbyterian Church and clerk of the HawkeVßay Presbytery. He was treasurer, and also Moderator, of the old Northern Presbytery of New Zealand, and was a man of considerable scholastic attainments. Information has been received in Oamaru that among the victims in the Empress •of Ireland disaster was Lieut. Eoger "Williams, the second officer, who was a cousin of Mrs T. Meek and Mr I. Hurst, of Oamaru. Lieut. Williams, v/i.o had just received a commission in the Eoyal Navy Reserve, was 30 years of age. The Eev. W. A. Keay, minister in charge of the Congregational Church at Auckland, is on a holiday visit to Christchurch. He has spent most of his life in Australia. To-morrow he will preach in.St. David's Church, Sydenham, in the morning, in. the Queen's Theatre in the afternoon, and in the Durham Street Methodist Church in>the evening. He will leave for the north early next week.
