ROSTAND AND MME. BERNHARDT.
Mr Edmond Kostand, the author of "L'Aiglon," in view of the fact that Mine. Sarah Berhardt has applied for an injunction to prevent that play, \in which she takes'the leading role at her theatre,, from being shown on a kinematograph film at the Chatelet Theatre or elsewhere, telegraphed the following letter; to his counsel, M. Clunet:— " Cambo-les : Bairi, June 5.
"I have the honour to inform you that I would rather cut off my hand than go to law with Mme. Sarah Bernhardt. No human power could fojree me to defend myself against her. You therefore plead alone. It is sufficient for me to have explained to my friend that I was once obliged to allow pictures of my work to be taken. Before any one else I would maintain a principle which interests all my confreres, but to her I yield, as they would all do.
'' I declare that what she wishes is always good. I abandon to her, if this compensation may •■ satisfy her lawyers, my entire rights in the kinematographic reproductions which are worrying her, and I embrace with respect and gratitude her fingers, in which a legal summons assumes for me the grace of a lily. "EDMOND KOSTAND."
