A HIGH HONOUR.

NEW ZEALANDERS HEAD LIST. MILITARY EXAMINATIONS. Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 16. The high honour has been earned by two New Zealanders of heading the list of candidates in a military examination open to the territorial forces in Canada, South Africa, the Malay States, and Australasia. The examination, which was held in March last, was a competitive one for officers of the colonial military forces to secure direct commissions in the British Regular Army." One bundled and eighty candidates competed. The, two New Zealanders, who passed iirst and second respectively, are Lieut. E H. Taylor, of the 3rd (Auckland) Regiment (first), and Lieutenant J. F. R Hislop, of the Bth (South Canterbury) Mounted Rifles (second).,* The total marks secured by these candidates are: —Lieutenant Taylor, 3307 out of a possible 4500; Lieutenant Hislop, 2971. The work of Lieutenant Taylor was particularly good in the two papers on military history and strategy, his marks in this department being 820 out of a possible 1000. Where possible the successful candidates in this examination are given the opportunity of selecting the regiment to which they wish to be appointed. Lieutenant Taylor has been appointed to the York and Lancaster Regiment, now stationed in India. Ho will leave shortly for Bombay on liis way to join his new regiment. Lieutenant Hislop has chosen the First Battalion of the South Lancashire Regiment—the "40th Foot" of the Maori War days—which is at present stationed at Quetta. He will in all probability receive his orders shortly.. The success of the two New Zealand Territorial officers redounds to their credit and is an eloquent tribute to the quality of the military instruction imparted to them under the new Defence scheme. The examination is an annual affair, and since its establishaient Dominion candidates have figured prominently in the results.
