The latter was disqualified in the sixth round. Carpentier. fell . on. his knees, and Smith rushed in and delivered a blow which apparently dazed the Frenchman, who was unable to rise. Fourteen thousand people were present at Olympia, including .many women, but the attendance was. smaller than at the Wells-Bell fight. The audience included numerous peer&and commoners, American Senators, professional and social notabili: ties, French sportsmen, wearing tricoloured ribbons, and Americans carrying J large stars and stripes to greet Smith. . Elaborate preparations were made for kinematographing the fight •by means of a travelling platform from the roof to within ten yards of the ring. ' The fight commenced with a clinch. Breaking away "Gunboat" Smith rushed in and swung low with his left, and was cautioned. Smith had margin of points in his favour at the end of the first round. . The second was clearly Carpentier's, as He had Smith in difficulties.' In the third round Smith,; was cautioned, for striking low'with' his left. Carpentier was immeasurably smarter, and : cleverer in ; his< footwork. In the fourth round Carpentiei' rushed in and sent in a right, landing fairly on the point!, Smith sprawling back.
