NOVEL INVENTION.
A SUN representative was yesterday shown aj^ ; yingenious. model of in-, vention designed to permit of ia ' failway train changing from one gauge of rails to iaiiother Whilst travelling.' The inventor J. Newlyn, of Ohristehureh, aitdi his invention, though comparatively-: pimple, as seen in the working model, has required come complex thinking.' The principle on which the inventioii works is, that where two different gauges join, a stretch of rails tapering : gradually fjwni, say, a 3j£t gauge, to s\, sft gauge, shall make the join, anil along this stretch, inside the rails are a pair of raised rails,*' which* press upon 'an attachment connected with the: wheels, as the train passes over, releases a clutch and allows the axles to extend or contract so as to fit the wider, or narrower, gauge. As the carriages pass over the raised rail on to the. different guage the clutch is released and the, axles are automatic, ally locked to fit 'gauge until another gauge 13 reached.' Each tiogie of a Carriage acts independently, aid the' system is perfectly: strong and easily practicable.. , it.\were taken, up, in A.US': tralia or India, where there are so many hundreds of miles of differentguages the .system would solve many difficulties/]oj,,ivansportatibn, ' ; \
