NORTH CANTERBURY PLOUGHING MATCH.

A BIG GATHERING. The annual ploughing match, held under the auspices of the Northern A. and P. Association, took place at Ashley yesterday in splendid weather. The land selected by the association was on the farm of Mr R. Peach* It varied considerably, but was inclined to be sticky. A few days of drying winds would have made it perfect. The competitors numbered 37, and only two dropped out. Every class was well contested except the boys' doublefurrow and the single furrow events. In- the latter there was only one competitor, and as there was no competition he withdrew. Generally the work was good, and the judges had a difficult task in making the awards. Considerable interest was taken in the highcut event, which was won by Mr C. R. Hay, of Morven. The takings at the gate amounted to £25 6/6, as against £7 last year, but the latter was taken on an inclement day. Mr B. S. Jordan, the energetic secretary of the association, had the secretarial work well organised, and the officials are all to be complimented upon the management of the matches. During the day the boys attending the. Rangiora High School visited the grounds in company with Mr Clark, the Agricultural Instructor, and Mr A. Whyte, one of the judges, explained the various classes of ploughing to the lads. ' The results were as follow:
