LOCAL TENNIS.

THE INTER-CLUB CONTEST. Local tennis players were favoured with aii day last Saturday, and all the courts were going at top. During the week the conditions have not been so favourable in consequence of 'the fog, but at the time of writing there seems every prospect of another fine Saturday. Most interest in last Saturday's interclub contest was centred, in the return match between Avonside and. Linwood. When these two teams, last met, the former had a very easy win, but on that occasion Linwood was without the services of Goss, who is always a tower of strength in any team. Even so, the result was the . same, for Avonside again, came out victorious, but only, by a margin of twelve games. . The game between Goss. and Seay was of a rather patchy nature". ■ At times both showed glimpses of their very best tennis, but neither were accurate enough to be quite effective. Goss's service is still his weak spot, but his driving and volleying showed little deterioration. All things considered, Seay's display was the best he has shown to date in the iriter-club contests. If he would use more judgment in selecting his scoring shots, his play would be vastly improved. Borrows arid Sheppard were very evenly matched, and the former's steadiness i just gained him the verdict. Sheppard showed, the better variety of strokes, and a little more restraint at times would lessen his mistakes. Sands was not seen at his best in his game with Wake, the latter's steadiness and reliable driving keeping the Avonside player' on the move all through. It is a pity that Wake does not cultivate a bigger variety of scoring shots, for it would improve both his singles and doubles play considerably. Berry had victory over Crichton, bi\t the tennis on either side was not of- a very attractive nature. ' As was only to be expected, Opawa had an easy win over 'Varsity, and so far the latter team has failed to draw blood in the contest. The only outstanding feature of the match was the splendid fight put up by Gotz against Ollivier. To run the New Zealand champion to 9-7 is a splendid feat for so young a player, and suggests future championship possibilities. Some of Goth's passing shots were really brilliant, and his volleying was neat and crisp. The inter-club contests will be continued to-morrow, when St. Albans meets Canterbury College and. Opawatries conclusions with Linwood. Considerable interest is being evinced in the latter contest, which will be played on the Linwood courts. SLAZENGEK.
