Colonel Heard returned to Wellington last night. Mr T. Jones, of Greymouth, arrived in Christchurch yesterday. Mr Henry Overton, of Hawke's Bay, is staying at the Clarendon. Mr E. C. G. Percy, of Wellington, arrived from the north to-day, and went on to Ashburton by the second express. Mr Henry Jamieaon, the well : known Hawke 's Bay pastpralist, passed through Christchurch to-day > en route for Dunedin.
Mr S. H. Lawrence arrived from the north this morning, and is staying at the Clarendon, on his way back to Dunedin.
The Rev. W. F. White, who is a member of the East Bengal staff of the New Zealand Baptist Missionary Society, is now in Christchurch on his first leave.
His Excellency the Governor arrived in Christchurch this morning, and will stay with Mr A. E. G. Rhodes, at Merivale, until Monday night, when he returns to Wellington. Mr and Mrs John Milne, of Glentunnel, celebrated tteir golden wedding in the Oddfellows' Hall In that township on Wednesday. '■%■ purse of sovereigns was presented to the guests of the evening.
Messrs A. J. Bell (Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union) and S. Bullock (Waimairi County Council) have been elected members of the Board of Governors of Christchurch Technical College.
Mr C. A. Ewen, general manager of the Commercial Union Assurance Company, Ltd., left by the Rotorua on Thursday for a six months' trip to England on "matters connected with his company./ Mr Gordon J. Eeid will act as attorney for the company in the meanwhile.
Mr F. Glover, who has passed through a three-year day course at the Coventry Institute, England, and who served his apprenticeship in the Daimler Company, has taken over the motor engineering class at the Christchureh.Technical College, in place of Mr Bauchop, who asked to be relieved to enable him to pursue his studies at Canterbury College.
A complimentary dinner was tendered to Mr and Mrs T. Bunting at the Hotel Windsor last evening by the staff of Bunting and Co., Ltd. Mr and Mrs Bunting are leaving on a world's tour, and they were bidden au revoir in fitting style. Among those present were the agents of the firm in Dunedin and Auckland. A very enjoyable evening was spent, and the guests received a small., token of the esteem in which they are held by all connected with the firm's activities.
On Thursday evening there was a large gathering at the Commercial Hotel, Ashburton, to farewell Messrs A. T. Robertson and ; W. K. Tomlinsqn. Mr Robertson has been for four years accountant of the Bank of New Zealand at Ashburton, and Mr Tomlinson filled a similar position for the Union Bank of Australia for five years.' The former has now been promoted to the position of manager at Leeston, and the latter becomes chief accountant at Napier. Each guest received a purse of sovereigns and other presentations from the hands of the Mayor (Mr Henry Davis), who presided over the gathering. A handsome presentation was made yesterday, to Mr Chas. Harris by his fellow officers in the Telegraph Department, to mark his retirement on superannuation after, over 35 years' service, including 20 years in the local office. Mr Talbot, Telegraph Superintendent, asked Mr. Harris's acceptance of a suit case, travelling,bagj and a silver watch, all suitably inscribed, and in the course of his remarks referred to-the recipient's long and faithful service, and also jto the personal esteem in which he is held, as' evidenced by the many local messages and telegrams from other offices throughout the Dominion.
