LADIES' HOCKEY.
ITEMS OF INTEREST. [ Still the weather persists in behaving atrociously, and'it eclipsed all its previous. performances last. Saturday to such aiv extent that there was absolutely no douJ>t in the mindd of.-both, .committee and .players., as ,tp~ whether the games should be .play.edv . Hockey was pronounced decidedly "off," and the weather didn't even have the satisfaction of causing' any. uncertainty jbr hesitation. Although the rain has the power to prevent the games from being played it cannot dissuade the notes-from being written; they are expected to appear with their accustomed regularity even if the matches are postponed Saturday after Saturday. Notes and news have to be obtained from somewhere, and if the weather chooses"; to look * with its blackest eye upon 'sport we won't bother to think matches, but discuss the English visit arid other interesting items. .■•••■ ; | The special Management Committee at Wellington has .arranged the itinetsf ary of the tour, "and, as far as is at present, the Canterbury match will be played ;on .Satujrday, September 12,and the New Zealand] match in Christ-; church on ' October 34 The members Of -the team will be billeted atr- the towns in which they are playing, anclj as New Zealanders have a reputation for hospitality and generosity it isj hoped that citizens, and others will showj it by ihviti ng> the visiters to their homes! and extending-to them rthe kindness an&j hospitality that is due! to them. ! . The South Canterbury Association-:; has asked the Canterbury Ladies? 1 Hockey Association to send a represent tative team down to Timaru on Thurs 5 -;. day next to play against the Canterbury representatives. It is to be a great hockey day in Timaru, the proceeds being in aid of an injured^player. •• Nothing definite has been decided, but it is thought that;iri all;probability a ladies' team will go down. It will not be a "rep." team, as it is too early in the season for each team in the competition to have been watched thoroughly, by. the selectors.. . If Timaru's iiivitation is to be accepted the team will be picked on Saturday at the conclusion of the games, and published, if possible, in THE SUN. .. The teams' positions to date are:—
