NEW CONSUMPTION CURE.

SOME REMARKABLE RESULTS. A new treatment for tuberculosis which, in the opinion of those most competent to judge, holds out a greater hope of an absolute cure than anything yet tried by science was described to the Academy of Medicin.e, Paris, which it is believed will ; ralik :> as one of the most glorious occasions in the annals of French science. .*„• The treatment is the work of a young Swiss biologist, Henry Spahlinger. It consists of intramuscular injections of antigenic . tubercule culture and of special ferments. The treatment causes cavities to dry up, eradicates all trace of bacilli and stops fever. These three results have never before been obtained by any other system. In incipient cases the improvement is extremely rapid, patients being able to follow their usual occupations. Of 54 persons treated, 17 are practically cured; most of the others are still under treatment and on a fair way to recovery. They are all cases of pulmonary tuberculosis, but the treatment has been tried with equal success for lupus and tuberculous ganglions. The report on the treatment was read to the Academy by Professor Letulle, one of the leading French experts on cervical tuberculosis. It was prepared and signed by Dr Edmond Lardy, of Geneva University, Dr Colbeck, of the City of London Hospital for Diseases of the Chest, and Dr Leonard Williams, of the French Hospital in London. M. Spahlinger is not a doctor. He was originally a barrister, but attracted by science he abandoned the eourts for the laboratory. His great discovery is the result of four years' research, on which he has spent £20,000 of his private fortune.
