CANTERBURY TIMBER-WORKERS' UNION.
A meeting of the Canterbury Timber-Workers'. Union was held on Saturday, Mr J. C. Ttalpli, vice-presi-dent, occupying the chair. .; In answer to the union's request for the release of the-strike prisoners, the Minister of Justice (Hon. A. L. Herdman) wrote that lie could see no sufficient grounds for recommending his Excellency the Governor to remit the sentences. ''"
It was decided to*, send a further request, and also to communicate with the local and Labour M.P's, with a view to enlisting their aid.
A letter was received from the secretary of the Timber-Workers' Federation (Mr J. Alsweiler), stating that the annual conference would be held in Wellington on July 6. The union decided, to be represented at the conference, and Mr C. F. Meyer was elected the official representative. It was further decided to be represented at the conference of arbitration unions on July 6, at Wellington, and also at the annual conference of the Social-Democratic Party a week later.
A communication was received from Mr P. Cleary, secretary of the North Canterbury Coal Merchants' Association, to the effect that the union's request that when engaging workers preference should be given to members of the union would be complied with, and that the members of the association would be circularised to that effect.
