Mr Geo. Scott returned from the north yesterday. Lieut.-Colonel Richardson left for the north on Saturday evening.
Sir George Clifford arrived in Christchurch yesterday from the north. Mr C. W. Hervey returned to Christchurch from Wellington yesterday.
Mr W. B. Cowlishaw returned to Christchurch from the north yesterday. Messrs J. R. Wilson and W. Morris, of London, are staying at Warner's Hotel.
Mr G. 11. Whiting returned to Christchurch yesterday from the north. Mr John R. Leggo, of Nelson, is staying at the United Service Hotel. Mr Richard Evans, of Kaiapoi, returned from the north by the Maori yesterday.
Captain Hennah, Inspector of Weights and Measures, arrived from Wellington' yesterday. , Mr H. A. Brown, of Geelong, Victoria, who has been visiting Christchurch, left for the south this morning.
Mr Party, Chief Government Electrical Engineer, will arrive in Christchurch to-morrow, and will pay a visit to Lake Coleridge. . The Hon. R. Heaton Rhodes was a passenger by the Maori from the north yesterday. He paid a visit to Southbridge to-day, and leaves for Wellington this evening. Visitors to Christchurch who are staying at Warners' Hotel include Professor and Mrs H. S. Hering, of Concord, U.S.A.; Mr R. C. Pfeilfer, of Sydney; aud Mr R. N. Brusill, of Timaru. Mr H. J. H. Blow, Under-Secretary for Public Works, has returned to Wellington from a health-recruiting trip to Tahiti. Mr Blow 's health has improved greatly. \ Amongst the visitors to Christchurch who are stayiqg at the Clarendon Hotel are Messrs H. Aliearn, M. J. Bloomfield, J. M. Fleming, J. M'Eldowney, and Stanley C. Beal, all of Wellington; W. 11. Hume and J. H. Hume, of Hamilton.
The Supreme Court at Gisborne opened to-day before Mr Justice Cooper. His Honour made reference to the Empress of Ireland disaster, and paid tribute to the late Mr Bloomfield, a member of the Bar. —Press Association.
The Rev. C. F. Saunders curate of St. Stephen's, Ashburton, is to take up relieving work at Cheviot and, later, on the West Coast, untilßishop Sadlier, of Nelson," returns from England. Mr C. L. Sparrow, B.A-, °f Christ's College, Christchurch, will take up the curacy of St. Stephen's after he hats been ordained. Mr A. Donald, for the past five months acting officer-in-charge of the local branch of the Labour Department', has been transferred to Napier, and will be succeeded here by Mr 11. B. Bower, at present Inspector of Factories at Invercargill. A number of residents of New Brighton met at the residence of Mr James Paterson to farewell. Constable E. Rowe, and Mrs and Miss Rowe, who are leaving for Queenstown, On behalf of the company Captain Owles presented Mrs Rowe with a plated kettle, with stand and spirit lamp, and Miss Thelma Rowe with a gold bangle.
