HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING. \ The annual meeting of the Canterbury Horticultural Society was held on Saturday evening, when Mr A. R. Ragg presided in the absence of the Hon. R. H. Rhodes, the president, who was unable to attend. . The report stated that a. very succesful year's work had just been accomplished. The four shows had reached a high standard of excellence, and' it was regrettable that at two of them —the daffodil and rose shows —the attendance had not been up to that of the previous year. The spring show had produced a fine collection of exj bibits, and the interest taken in it was an eloquent testimony to the work done by the Narcissus Committee. The rose and sweet-pea shows had been well filled, but the attendance had also been poor. The chrysanthemum show had been remarkable for the size and quality of the cut flowers, which had reached a quality never before attained in New Zealand. The death of Mrs Townend, the patroness of the Society, had removed a generous supporter of the society. Appreciation was expressed of the work of Miss Smith, who had relinquished her duties as secretary of the society, which position she hail filled since its inception eleven years ago. Her place had been filled by Mr J. Timbrell. The membership had slightly increased, but the committee were of opinion that it should be double what it is at present. The financial position was thoroughly sound, there being a credit balance of £62 0/3. The report and balance-sheet were adopted.
