BOXING.
, NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL. meeting of the council, Mr J. R.v Evans presided. - j'The executive reported that since the 'previous ftieetifiig the Gisborne Association had been / granted permission t» A,"' Lowe and W. Bartlett for the ,nsavy>weight championship at Gisborne On Jtytay 28 y the Millerton Association to match : J.. O'Neil, of Westport, and Stewart, of Timaru, for the bantamweight championship, at Millerton, on June 27; the Christchurch Sports Club to match J. Hagerty and P. Cook for the - light-weight championship, at Christ- ' church, on August 11; and the Norther a Association to match A. Lowe and A. Porley for the heavy-weight championship,' at .Auckland, on July 14. In accepting the position of patron of the Council, the Hon. A. L. Herdman wrote: —"I desire to say that I look upon boxing as one of the finest and most useful sports in the country, and one that should be, encouraged. I am entirely in agreement with the council in the successful efforts it has made to keep boxing in the country clean." -
The Wanganui Association wrote stating that Mr L. Cohen had been selected as president of the council, and that July 22 and 23 were the dates'fixed for the New Zealand championships. Correspondence was received from Rotorua announcing the formation there of an amateur boxing club, and asking for particulars respecting affiliation, and if the club were required to join the local centre.
The council secretary reported that the information sought had been forwarded.
The Hawke's Bay Association wrote stating that W. Bartlett had not paid a board account incurred by him during a recent visit to Hastings. Promises that he had made to settle had not been fulfilled.
. The council secretary reported that, on receipt of the communication, lie had written Bartlett by registered letter, asking him to call in order to endeavour to settle the matter, so avoid bringing it before the council. Bartlett apparently ignored the letter.
It was decided to inform Bartlett that, unless the account was settled within a fortnight, the council would take further action. It was also decided to inform associations. by circular letter that, several cases of failure by boxers to pay board accounts having been reported, local associations for the future should themselves pay the accounts from the amounts guaranteed as expenses. The Southland Association wrote that owing to heavy losses last year it hoped the council would be able to reduce the subscription fee for the current year.
The council secretary stated that he had written the association suggesting that the question of the subscription should stand over for the. present; until it wak seen how the competitions this season resulted financially. The action was endorsed.
It was decided to bring before the Wanganui Conference the question of the definite legalisation of the controlling authority of boxing in New Zealand.
It was decided to write to the Sydney Stadium management on the matter of an agreement with respect to reciprocal action concerning disqualifications im posed upon professionals.
