THE CHILDREN'S SANATORIUM.

To tfie Editor of THE SUN; v -

Sir^ —Now -that puttie■beneficence en-' ables something to be done "in the matter of a children's-sanatorium-, 1 it- is to : be hoped the architects of Ch*istelmreh will have opportunity to' submit" suit- : * able designs.- ; ■•■■■ • ' For some years past in Christchurelf many , thousands -of pounds have, been spent ,on" the public hospital buildings, including the King George Coronation Hospital, but the ratepayers and ■ subscribers cannot say -that they, ga .the" architects "of Christchureh an -.apportunity to show what, they could do.; It is time the people of - Christchureh showed more; interest in the spending of public money. Jil my opinion, sir, when the cost of buildings is* born by the ratepayer, or by public subscription,' local architects should-be 'given opportunity to. submit., designs.." . In. .Christ-.' church there' would be -no • difficulty m setting up a committee of i««n~ competent to judge them. Unfortunately, these days, not much consideration is given ,to architectural heaiity, Clfrislchurch being no" exception in this resi>ect. Truly, we have some buildings to.be proud of, but apart from consider' ations of profit, every builder ought to he actuated by a desire to beautify; € think the above .pro|)osition would'not only encourage local architects in their efforts to improve the buildings in our, city, but would evoke a spirit of emulation amongst private i nvestors, which in process of time would mean a . City Beautiful.'—l ain, etc.,
