SPREYDON AMENITIES.
MR H. G. ELL'S PROPOSALS.
Mr H. G. Ell, M.P., has sent the following letter to the secretary of the Spreydon Beautifying Association:— Dear Sir, —I have been expecting to hear of a meeting of the newly-formed association, which would give me an opportunity of making certain suggestions. However, perhaps I had better rtate them in writing, as there will be little opportunity for 'me coming now, in view of the early approach of the date, when I will have to leave for Wellington. The following are the suggestions which I submit for the approval of the society:— '' Wilderness Eoad to be planted from Lincoln Eoad to the bridge over the Heathcote on both sides with plane trees, the trees to be planted 50ft apart and about 20in from the edge of the channel; each tree to be tied to a stake with 3in webbing, the stake to be of jarrah, 2x2, 9ft Gin long. This will allow of the stake being placed in the ground 2ft fiin, leaving 7ft above the ground. The stakes should be painted dark green. I am convinced, from experience, that this is the cheapest and the safest way to protect the trees, if the trees are enclosed within guards, the trees are liable to break away from the tying strings, grind agaipst the guards, and so the bark is chafed away and the tree injured, in the case of the stake, if they do happen to break away no serious damage is done. These remarks, of course, will apply to all the other trees planted. "I would suggest that Somerfield Street be planted from Colombo Street to Wilderness Eoad with mountain ash. As these trees are not so large, they should, 1 think, be planted 30ft apart, and about the same distance from the edge of the channel. '' Coronation Street I would plant with purple plum, .'.Oft apart and 20in from the channel. It is a tree which does not attain any great height, and the foliage is very beautiful. Redruth Avenue I suggest should be planted with silver birches 40ft apart and about the same distance as the last from the channel. Milton Street to be planted from Strickland Street to Wilderness Road with chestnut trees 40ft apart and 20 inches from "the channel. Lyttelton Street to be planted from Lincoln Road, right through the end of the street on both sides with beech trees 40ft apart. Frankleigh Street to be planted with ash trees 40ft apart and about 20in or 24in from the channel. Studholme Street to be planted with white thorn 30ft apart and 20in from the channel; antl Leitch Street to be planted with double-flowering crimson thorn 30ft apart, and the same distance from the channel. Eosebery Street to be planted with Laburnum 30ft apart and 20in from the channel.
'' The following streets to be planted, about 20in or 24in from the channel:— Baretta and Rose Streets, with mountain ash :50ft apart; Simeon Street, mountain aeh 30ft apart; . Cobham Street, silver birch 30ft apart; Neville Street, native vibbonwood 25ft apart; Wychbury Street, ash trees 50ft apart; Edengridge. Street, mountain ash 30ft apart; Dunn Street, laburnum 25ft apart; Haward Street, chestnut, pink flower, 40ft apart; Mill Road, plane trees 50ft apart; Bletsoe Avenue, chestnut tree, white flower, 40ft apart; Aylmer Street, laburnum 30ft apart; Edinburgh Street, lime trees 40ft apart; Selwyn Street, to be planted from Crescent Road to the end on both sides with lime trees 40ft apart. '' I venture to say that if these trees are successfully planted and cared for in time they will add very ' great beauty to the Spreydon district, and will make Spreydon an objpet of interest to all lovers of beauty created by trees. —Yours faithfully, H. G, ELL."
