BOROUGH COUNCILS.

SUMNER. At last night's meeting of the Sumner Borough Council there were present the Mayor (Mr G. W. C. Smithson), Crs. Boulton, Brewer, LiII, Rankin, Stuart, ami the Hon. John Barr. REPORTS. The following reports of committees were adopted:— The Works Committee recommended that the Sumner Fire Brigade be granted the free use of the Town Hall on the occasion of their annual social on June 26. The Finance Committee's reportshowed that receipts to the district fund account amounted to £123 14/10, and expenditure £.'{36 14/10; there was a debit balance at the bank of £598 4/-. The other accounts showed balances as follow:—Gasworks loan cr. £36 3/3; creek outlet, cr. £B4O 14/4; gasworks revenue dr. £3Bl 19/3. Accounts amounting to £245 7/1 were passed for payment. CORRESPONDENCE. 11. Hobday wrote that lie had secured a right-of-way 22ft wide connecting Moiiek'a Bay Spur and Mt Pleasant Road, and this would be available as soon as the Council could take it over. Cr. Barr suggested that the land should be acquired and invested in the Council as a public reserve. The matter was left in the hands of the Mayor. The Sumner Fire Brigade invited the Mayor and Councillors to be present at their annual ball on June 26. It was decided to accept the invitation. « The Minister of Railways forwarded a circular letter intimating that the Railway Department was prepared to erect warning boards at a distance of' 150 or 200 yards from level railway, crossings, provided the Council v would undertake their maintenance. As there are no railway crossings in the borough, the Council -decided to.take no action in the matter. The Waimairi County Council wrote asking the Council to appoint two delegates to a conference of local bodies to discuss the levy by the Domain Board., The conference would t b© held in the Drainage Board office at a.m. on Saturday, June 20. The Mayor said that he; did not think much good could be gained by .the conference, but it would do no harm if the Council was represented* It was decided to appoint Cr. Barr as the Council's representative. Mr W- Radcliffe; Lytt6lton,"asked for a contribution to the cost of a portrait to the late Mr G. Laurenson, which it was intended to hang in the Lyttelton Council Chambers. . ,It was decided to make.a contribution and also to suggest that photographic enlargements, of - the portrait be obtained for placing in the various borough council chambers in the Lyt-' telton electorate. On the motion of Cr. Barr it was 1 decided to vote £5 towards the expenses of the town-planning lectures'by 'Messrs Davidge and Reade. \\ .
