Y.M.C.A DEBATING CLUB.

There was much laughter, and good cause for it, at the Y.M.C.A. on Saturday evening, when a mock breach of promise suit was held before Mr J. Caugliley, J., the plaintiff being Miss Annie Eliza Juvenia Pankhurst (Mr J. Hardy), and the defendant Count Philomus Wetta-Jetta (Mr C. MacDougall). The claim was for £5,000,000 damages, and witnesses for plaintiff and defendant were Professor Alfred Peranus de Spooney (Mr W. J. Mason), Miss Susanuali Maud Slimwaste (Mr W. T. Connibear), Count Hatchbach (Mr H. E. Plimsoll), Marquis Weep-um (Mr A. Cade), Lady Susannah Honeysuckle Temple (Mr W. H. Beanland), and Captain Splittus (Mr G. E. Billson). Mr A. Hunter appeared as counsel for plaintiff and Mr W. Dobbs for the defendant. The foreman of the jury was Mr F. J. Hulston. The plaintiff made out a strong case, but the evidence for the defendant was equal to it, and the witnesses on both sides were responsible for much hilarity amongst the onlookers, who were mostly ladies. After a short retirement the jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff, with damage assessed at 19/11.
