shipping NOTES. . The Maitai will leave Wellington for Dunedin direct on the Melbourne run on Saturday, June 20. The Flora is not expected to reacli Lvttelton from Dunedin before the beginning of next week. She will load cargo for West Coast ports. The GovfMimen.t steamer Hinemoa arrived at Wellington on Friday night from northern lighthouses. After having been bar-bound at Hokianga' for a week the Hinemoa left lust Sunday for lvnipara where she sailed on Monday for Mamikau to land Principal Keeper Woodbury at the Soutii Head lighthouse and take off Principal Keeper Anderson, who has been transferred to Waipapa Point. After calling in at Onehunga the Hinemoa continued experimental trawling oil the way down under the supervision of Captain Nielsen and Mr Anderson, curator of the fish j hatcheries, Portobello. Very good . hauls | were obtained, and'operations were continued j down to New Plymouth.
Ailvit-e lias been received to .the effect that the It.M.S. Mararna was dispatched from Vancouver ivt noon on "Wednesday last for Auckland, via Honolulu and Suva. She lias on | board 130 passengers for all ports, while her ! cargo for New Zealand amounts to 450 tons, of which 1(J0 tons are for ports other than Auckland. The Marania is due at the northern port 011 June 30. The two power lifeboats to be carried by ! the new C'unard liner Aquitania have been constructed by Messrs J. I. Tliornevcroft and Co., and will be carried on the boat deck. Kacli boat is 30ft in length by'- 9ft 6in in breadth, and is fitted with wireless* apparatus. The design shows a decided departure from any previously accepted form of ship's lifeboats. Their primary function is to tow ordinary rowing lifeboats. The wireless apparatus will have a range of about 100 to 500 miles for transmitting, enabling them to keep in constant communication with steamers in case of an emergency. -The engine is protected by a close compartment, and would consequently not be effected by heavy seas, wind, or rain. The two boats are fitted with Thorneycroft four-cylinder motors of 30 li.p. with reversing gears. > A remarkably fast passage from "Wliangaroa to Auckland has been made by the Auck-land-owned launch Scripps 111. The vessel left the wharf at liussell at 5.12 p.m. on Monday, and reached Queen's wharf, Auckland, at 2*lo a.m. on Tuesday—-the time occupied by the passage being just eight house' 58 minutes. . This time, it is believed, is a record for .the distance. NEW ZEALANb SHIPPING CO., LTD. The latest movements of the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamers are as follow: The Opawa, from Wellington May 23, arrived at Monte Video on the 13th inst., eu route for London. The Whakatane, now at Oamaru, leaves there about the ltJth inst. for Timaru and Lyttelton, and should leave the latter port about the 24th inst. for London and Hull. ' Th;e Tongariro is due at Wellington on the 17th inst, and is. to sail for Loudon two dnys later. " The Batsford, from St. John (Canada) leaves Auckland this evening for Wellington, and is due in Lyttelton about the 20th inst. The Kaipara leaves Bluff on the Kith inst. for Lyttelton. The Kotorua arrived at Napier on Sunday evening, and is to leave on the 17th inst. .for Auckland.
INTKRCOLONIAL SKIiVICK ALTJOKA TIONS.
The overhaul of the Maheno, at present being carried out at Port Chalmers, is expected to be completed early next" month. She is scheduled to pass through Lyttelton on -Uil.v 17, and leaves Wellington the next day for Sydney, where she will re-enter the Sydney-Auckland service, leaving the former port on July 22. The Manuka will leave Sydney on July 18 for Wellington direct", and continue running in the Sydney-Wellington Melbourne service. ■ Early next month the Monowai is to undergo overhaul at Port Chalmers, anfc will be replaced in the DunedinAuckland service by the Maitai, which leaves Dunedin on July 8. The Mokoia, which arrived at Dunedin yesterday from Wellington direct, leaves to-day for the Bluff, Hobart, and Melbourne, and on her return trip proceeds direct to Sydney from Wellington. On arrival back at Dunedin from Sydney on July 18 she changes into the Dunedin-Auck-latul run in place of the Warrimoo. The latter vessel will leave Dunedin- on the same day for Bluff, Hobart, and Melbourne.
