A DEADLY WEAPON.
TORPEDO GUIDED BY SEARCHLIGHT. V . A torpedo, of deadly precision and power, moved, through the night at the will of a 'man directing the; rays of a searchlight, has beenV invented by John Hays Hammond, jun:; an Amefiean inventor,- according to an announcement made last night by t)r Jacques L'oeb, the wizard of science, in the course of a lecture given in California Hall, Berkeley, says an Americsan exchange under date.April 4. It is called the. torpedo with the silenium eyes. The raysTfrom the searchlight cause a -chemical '. reaction' which, draws the -missile- unerringly into the path of light. The 4aw behind it is a recent discovery of science, antl was made the basis of Dr Loeb's lecture last night. He. used the Hammond invention as an illustration'of his theory. ". Left to Imagination.
He.left it to the imagination, he said, to pieture the result .of the use of this forced .He declared, that it is the Jaw of all Nature that the motions of animals are- controlled'-by it, and that all space is filled with lines of forces above the physical. * '" . '".'". DrLoeb -spoke of many other things, of appealing interest. The. romance of science was clearly presented to the big audience. "DrvLoeb was formerly, of, the University 'of California,,(but is now of ,the Rockefeller ....Institute .of New York. He has been .buried, for in his laboratory at.Pacific Grove, where, he is~makirig special investigations, supposedly the origin of life. He went back to.his laboratory as soon as the lecture was over. .;.'
. -..Due to Rays of Light.. Even - emotions will some day come undSr the-head, of exact science, Dr Loeb declared. This is the last field to be the light rays. ..'■ of-.animals' seem, free, but" they are not—-they are -controlled by laws of Nature, just like iron filings are ruled:by a magnet. : Yo.U-.ar have to use your imagination to .understand this. All apace is not empty. Instead,, it is filled with lines of forces. These reach out and pull the. animals. ; "It has long been known-that anir mals move" toward i;he .lights The Realise .is'tHe .chemical reaction in the animal through- light on:its/eye. We can show by. science that light acts metaphysicallyon the will of the^animal^ much in it£acts onta photographic; plate.
