Mr Milne, the •*TradV, Commissioner, interviewed, said that New Zealand' appeared to be in a prosperous condition, but, as in Australia, farmers had difficxilty in securing labour, and were compelled to turn their attentions more and more to machinery. He viewed American competition in Australia with some concern, and when Panama Canal ■was-'opened, the British manufacturers would have to look to their laurels.
