DEBATING COMPETITIONS.
CLUB DELEGATES CONFER.
It has been felt for a long time among members of local debating clubs that it would be most advisable from the point of assisting literary and debating work in general, to hold annual competitions for the members of all the Christchurcb. clubs.
The Y.M.C.A. have latterly been the prime movers in the matter, and as the result of a circular" letter issued front their club on May 9, a meeting was held in the association's rooms last evening, when the-following clubs were represented:—Y.M.C.A.: Messrs F. Lv Anderson, R. Burgess, and Hulston; Heathcote: Mr J. E. Doolan; Trinity: Messrs W. Conhibear and L. Campbell; Durham Street: Messrs Fisher and Ambler; Knox: Mrs Foster; Technical College: Miss E. Carter and Mr W. J. Dobbs; St. Paul's: Mr Wooton and Miss Line. Mr F. L. Anderson was elected chair- 1 man, and Mr WootOn secretary pro tern. The chairman reported having received favourable replies from the' Canterbury ' College Club and from the Rugby Street Methodist Club. A favourable reply had also been received from the {secretary oJP the Lytteltbn Club, but as the meetings had not yet been started this year, no delegates could be appointed. It was moved by Mr R. Burgess, seconded by Mr W. J. Dobbs: '.'That it is desirable that a Literary and Debating Clubs' Competitions Society be formed for the purpose of holding annual competitions." ' '\
On the motion of Mr J. E. Doolan, seconded by Mrs Foster, it was resolved: "That; the members present ■'form themselves into a Debating Clubs?' Competitions Committed, with power,~to add to their number." '", It was further resolved, o'fl the motion of Mr F. Ambler, seconded by Mr W. Gonnibear, "That an executive com*' mittee be formed." The committee elected was: —Mr J. E. Doolan (Heatheote), Messrs F. L. Anderson and B. Burgess (Y.M.C.A.), Mr Wboton (St. Paul's), Mr F. Ambler. (Durham Street), Mr J. Stinear (Technical College), and Mr Torrence (Knok.) .' . Some little discussion followed" as ta the most suitable time for holding the competitions, and it was resolved, on • the motion of Mr Hulston, seconded by Mr Campbell, that they be held, if pos- - sible, during the last week 6f August. It was decided that the competitions be open to the public. ■"■?
