DARING THIEVES.
AND AN INTERESTED DETECTIVE. Sydney thieves are conducting operations in a very nonchalent mariner at present, and it seems that ttiey have little to fear from the intrepid private detective, judging from the report of-a recent burglary, anyway. .According to the report a member of a Jfirni of private detectives watched from his office window the efforts of two men to enter a tailor's shop opposite, in Pitt'Street. The men stood under the glare of an electric light, at .8 o 'clock at night in a busy street for quite ten minutes. One ofthem speared to,: be fumbling with the handle of the door, while the other stood, disinterestedly smoking a rette, and looking up and down the street. Eventually the door opened. The men immediately pulled it close K stepped out on to the footpath, and walked slowly down to the corner a few yards away. They remained there for a few minutes, and-then, assuming a more or less businesslike attitude, apparently with the idea of casting off all appearance of suspicious conduct, they walked back to the shop, pushed the door open, and stepped inside. Th,ese preparations were witnessed by the detective, who, after the men had disappeared inside, hurried to the telephone and called up the police. In a few minutes two constables were birthe scene, but the thieves had flown. A search of the premises revealed that the interior of the shop was in a state of disorder, and drawers were lying open in all directions. The police afterwards detained on suspicion two men whom they found hanging about. outside a theatre.
