REFRIGERATION.
;p PLANT FOR UNIVERSITY. \i' A great many people nowadays fail to realise ,the importance to New Zealand of the freezing industry. The Board of Governors of Canterbury .College, however, gives this branch of its proper place, and following on the lines of other universities it proposes to instal a refrigerating plant for experimental purposes. All arrangements are now complete, and the machinery will,be installed in the near future. The plant is similar to tlie one recently set up in the Hong Kong University, and consists of a single acting vertical type ammonia (N.H. 3) machine. It is one of J. and E. Hall's, refrigerators, and has been specially, designed for experimental- purposes. Its ice-making capacity averages 15 hundredweight in 24 hours, and it is of sufficient capacity to deal with a cold chamber of 1200 cubic feet internal capacity.- A 5-li.p. electric motor is sufficient to drive the . whole plant. The- capacity of the ice tank is about 5 e&t. This installation should prove a decided benefit to young engineering students attendig Canterbury College, as hitherto no practical instruction \in re'frigeration could be given. The -lecture room is all very well in its way, but,;as usual, practical work with a practical plant; is of infinitely more value. Such instruction as will be available with this machine lias not been obtainable outside of the big works. ,
