AN ADMITTED ATHEIST.
To tlie Editor of THE SUN. Sir,—The headlines of a paragraph in to'day's issue (An Admitted Atheist : -—Knows No God) needs no comment. Do you not think, that the appearance in your columns, of a long paragraph of this nature, is, to put it mildly, just a , little like a spot on the face of THE SUN. In New Zealand where such a ;large proportion of the community»iß avowedly agnostic, i.e. atheist, and a still .larger portion quite indifferent to : - v theology of any kind, dbes such an incident (somewhat rare perhaps) call for such a supreme effort from your Press Association ? the Y.M.C.A. "appears to be making desperate efforts to increase its membership and is quite broad-minded enough to accept agnos- * tics and atheists as members. Ca-ndidly, don't you thinly THE SUN ought to make a desperate effort to blush, just a little, and play the game spot barred. ' —I am, etc., t SUN WOESHIPPER. 10th May, 1914. [We do not think our correspondent , is 'tb&t' ' ; a' large pro- j agnostic.-' Unquestionably there is Ya - great deal ;of indifference towards ; Christianity,; but the number of per- - sons who openly avow a disbelief in it is small- if we : are to judge by the steps they take to propagate agnosticism. Nor do we think our correspondent is correct in stating that an atheist is eligible for membership of the Y.M.C.A. As for the heading complained of, we do not see anything objectionable about it. The Press Association considered t the incident of sufficient importance to send a fairly long message and the heading merely indicated'* it's contents. Ed. THE SUN.],
