During May, 1912, the great International Exhibition was held in London; this, the first held in London ton 40 years. It proved to be tho greatest Flower Show the world has ever seen. The "Gardener's Chronicle" gave a 25-guine* cup for the best New Plant shewn, and' after a sever* competition with a new Orchid of great merit, th* prise was awarded to am exhibit *f tk* Leptospermum Nichollii oxhfbited by th* Rev. Bosoawen, of Cornwall. This was described a« the best Novelty in tk* Exhibitioa. Th* history of the plant is worth recording, and ia aa follows: —I* the summer of 1906 Mr W. Nicholls, a well-know* wool-buyer, of Belfast, North Canterbury, N.Z., whil* visiting Naira and Sons' Nursery, wore a buttonhole of a crimson manuka. Th* firm at Mice recognised a xew thing, amd asked ita where-' abouts, and if it could b* procured. This, however, wm a secret, aud all the information tendered by Mr Nichi»Us wm that the original plant was growing in the naauka scrub between Chaney's Corner aad th* sea. Messrs Nairm, however, would net be put off, and asked for' cutting*, which wer* supplied by Mr Nicholls. Thee* cutting*, however, wear* useless for striking purpose*, as th* growth w«a too hard, and only too or two plant* wero raised, and th«w* were stunted i* growth. On a braach brought, however, feher* wer« some soods, which were and as a result sous# 110 plants were raised, These, with th* exception, of seven, •kowed ia their growth similar character to the old variety of manuka, and later when ia bloom wer* jaoetly white. Th* exceptions, however, showod dark reddish foliage, and a differeaic* i» habit. When ia bloom they proved to b* criusoa ia colour, and from one oflF thMO (th* beot variety) tk* mow famous Leptospermum Nichollii ha« be«a uamed iatroduced into th* horticultural world. To Nairn and Sons th* honour of distributing this plaat to the world can be accorded. Quite a number of plant# have been delivered m England, where it is much sought after. I* New Zealaad thousands of plants have been supplied from our Vursery. STRONG PLANTS, in Pots, 2/6 each. NAIRN & SONS, Lincoln Road, Chch. telephone No. 241. .25
