THE BUDGET DEBATE.
"DOCTRINES ABANDONED."
WEALTH OUTGROWS TAXATION.
By Cable.- —Press Association. —Copyright, LONDON, May 7.
liT the House of Commons, Mr A. Chamberlain said he welcomed the grants in aid of local taxation. The Budget marked the abandonment of the Liberal doctrines of retrenchment and econohiy. The Treasury no longer checked expenditure, and was the most extravagant of all the departments. Taxes had been raised to a war figure in a time of unexampled prosperity. What, he asked, would be done in lean years? Mr E. S. Montagu, Secretary of the Treasury, said the growth of the national wealth was greater than the growth of taxation, and the country could well afford the new Budget.
