» ■ ■ ■ ■ DESCENT IN A CRATER. A FOOLHARDY 7 ENGINEER. "Times'" and "Sydney Sun" Services. -■ ROME, May 4. A Hungarian engineer descended the crater of Stromboli whilst it was active. He wore a suit of asbestos, with a mask over his face and a metal helmet on his head. He had been lowered 700 feet into the abyss when the oxygen apparatus ceased to work. He pressed an electric button, and his- comrades drew him up. He was in a pitiable condition. Gases had nearly suffocated him, and he Avas severely injured by stones and lava which had been hurled past him.
