SAVING A RESERVE.

APPEAL TO THE MINISTER OF LANDS. A SYMPATHETIC REPLY. A Gazette notice was published recently offering for sale the timber on the Everett Road Reserve, near Inglewood, in Taranaki, a spot of great natural beauty. Mr H.'G. Ell, M.P., interested himself in saving this piece of bush from destruction, with the result that a number of Christchurch residents sent a telegram to Mr Massey in his capacity as Minister of Lauds, urging that the bush be set aside as a scenic reserve. The following is a copy of the telegram: "We, the undersigned, concur in the. request which has been made that the Everett Road Reserve near Inglewood should not be destroyed, and we strongly urge you to declare so much of the land which is covered with forest a scenic reserve, and so preserve it for all time. We have seen the Gazette notice describing the timber for sale, . and it shows that the first is of a magnificent character which it would be a great shame to destroy. There are too few reserves of the primeval forest of this country. We would point out that a. reserve of a primeval forest of a country does not belong to the people of. the district in which it exists, but to the people of the Dominion. We therefore earnestly \ urge you not to sell the forest; if you cannot see your way to sot the forest aside as a scenie reserve without some monetary compensation to the Government, we would ask.you to allow the' people to buy the trees in order that' the forest may be preserved. We-sin--: . cerely trust that you will take immediate action to withdraw the forest trees 'from sale and to declare the land a t&enie reserve. In doing so we believe you would be acting with the concur-' renee and in accordance with the wishes of a great majority of the people of this country. / " . "H. D.. AelanH, Charles R. Clark,' William ;Eeece, B. -M. Molineaux,i R.' M. Macdonald, A J. 0. Jameson,, John Anderson, A. Stedhtan, Leonard <E.' Clark, A. W. Beaven, E. C. Huie, James A, Frostiek, H. J. Beswick, Geo. Gould, ;Wm. Wood, C, F. Thomas, F.\ Boyle, E. G. Rhodes, E. M. Rolleston,; G. Bowron, K. Neave, Geo. T. Booth, George Harper, J. D. Hall, Rose Rhodes, • T. E. G. Blunt, Ethel F. Pyne, C. Edith I xDeans, Alex. Boyle, A. Ferguson, F. H. Tvne, Helen M. Rolleston, Helen T. Hall, Basil Seth-Smith." The following reply was received by. Mr Acland yesterday:— . "I am duly in receipt of telegram received.by yourself and other gentlemen regarding Everett Reserve near Inglewood, and representations will have careful consideration. —W. F. Massey."
