During a boarding-house fire a attempted to escape over a roof, but fell and was killed: another was descending when the ladder broke. Captain Smith, of the fire brigade, sus-r pended by his feet from a window, caught him and held him safely until another ladder was procured anil the man saved. The death roll was 11.
