NOTE NO. 169948!
FRAUDULENT "TENNERS?*
NOT SEEN IN CHKISTCOTJBOH. In Auckland there are in circulation a number of forged ten poxmcfnotes, each a photographic reproduction of the paper issued by the Bank of New Zealand. The work is in black and a warm brown, and is complete even to perforation. But the paper is not bank paper. A leading Christchurch hotel says that it has dealt with many ten pound notes during the past few days, and has not had a bad one amongst them. One bank says that it has seen none, and has no official knowledge of their being in existence. As against that it knows the number to .be afraid of, 169948 —a note on thinner paper than usual, with the manager's signature in 'rubber stamp, and the date October 1, 1913.
In the other banks the position is the k same; and the man who takes a note numbered 169948 may be assured that he will be able "to keep the paper as a memento of his folly. ■ \ The banks will not negotiate'it. .- The whole-of yesterday's totalisator takings at the Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting were good money, and the notes were all in order .when paid in this morning.
