PERSONAL.

Rev. Father Lane arrived by the Wahine to-day. Col. A. W. Andrews was a passenger from the north to-day by the Wahine. Mr J. Craigie, M.P. for Timaru, left for the north last evening. The Hon. H. F. Wigram, M.L.C., left for the north last evening.

Messrs 5. Rennie, H. J. Watt, W. Dixon, F. F. Cook, and Major Chaytor arrived from the north yesterday. Mr T. Buxton, M.P. for Temuka, arrived from Wellington by the Wahine to-day.

Mr W. E. Pearson (Timaru) arrived from Wellington this morning and is staying at Coker's Hotel. Mr T. Sutherland, an old Christchurch boy, who is now an officer in the Customs at Hongkong, is on a visit to this city, on furlough. Mr N. V. Craske, of the Union Company's staff, who has been on an extended trip to Australia, returned to Lyttelton by the Wahine. Mr J. A. Hanan, M.P. for Invercargill, arrived from Wellington last evening and left for the West Coast this morning.

Dr Brownlie, Dean Harper, Mr F. W. Hart, and Mr Thomas Brown left Christchurch for Wellington last evening.

Bishop Verdon, of Dunedin, and Eev. Father O 'Connell were through passen-' gers to Auckland by the Monowai terday. Mr J. A. Eussell, assistant superintendent of the Telegraph Department, accompanied by Mrs Russell, leave Christchurch to-night on an extended tour of the North Island.

The Mayor (Mr H. Holland) paid a visit to Sheffield to-day, and attended the Malvern Show. The deputy-Mayor, Cr H*. B. Sorensen, was in attendance at the Council Chambers.

The Eev. and Mrs Oxbrow, the Ray. and Mrs Strand, the Rev. andMrS; Ready and son, ; and, the. Revs. Kilpatrick and Maekie arrived by the Wahine from Wellington this morning. 1 Among "the departures by the ferry steamer Lyttelton last evening were Mr and Mrs J. E. After the University Cricket match was concluded yesterday, S. J. Smith, of the South Island team, was presented with Mr A. T. Donnelly's trophy for the best all-round ..player in allithe 'Varsity College matches which have been played. Mr Francis R. H. Drake, who was secretary to Captain Scott's Ant j arctic expedition, and was promoted to the' rank of Staff Paymaster when he rejoined the Royal Navy, has been appointed temporarily to H.M.S. Victory at Portsmouth.'

Among the passengers who arrived by the Island steamer Navua at Auckland last week was Princess Charlotte, eldest- daughter of the King of Tonga, who was accompanied by Mrs Masterton. The princess has returned to Auckland to continue her education at the Diocesan High School for Girls. . Among the guests staying at Warner's Hotel are Messrs W. Bourke (Wellington), J. Carroll (Wairoa), J. Sheridan (Gisborne), W. Sharpin (Gisborne), L. J. Aden (Gisborne), Mr and Mrs W. D. Cowie (Invercargill), and Mrs J. P. Murphy (Timaru).

.New arrivals at the Clarendon Hotel include Mr and Mrs A. H. Lord (Melbourne), Messrs L. C. Simpson (Sydney), A. E. Kerr (Timaru), J. Stony (Southbridge), R. Mitchell Thorn (Melton), Jas. Metzger (Bluff), Mr and Mrs Evenis (New Plymouth), Mr and Mrs H. Gilfillan.

At last evening's meeting of the Council of the Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, Mr A. L. Shand was presented by his fellow-members of the council with a cabinet desk as a wedding gift. In making the presentation, Dr Morton Anderson referred to the, lo'hg and valuable services which Mr Shand had rendered to the society, and particularly to his excellent work as chairman of the Gardens Committee.
