THE SILVER BAND.
WELCOMED TO CHRISTCHURCH.
The Silver Band is a Wellington organisation of the Salvation Army •which is well known in that city for its musicianly accomplishment. The thirty-eight members arrived in Christchurch yesterday, and were entertained at the Salvation Army Citadel in the afternoon by the Christchureh corps, the Mayor (Mr H. Holland) being present at the welcome.^ The Mayor was introduced by StaffCaptain Gunn, who referred to the worthy object of the members of the band, which is to assist the local band to raise funds for the purchase of the purer toned silver-plated instruments. The members of the band were spending their holiday in achieving this purpose, and he considered it an excellent way of spending a holiday. The Mayor said he w T as pleased to see so many members of other religious denominations , present—it was a healthy sign of the movement which was bringing the Churches together, a movement which, had been strongly marked during the past fifteen years. He welcomed the bandsmen to Christchurch, hoping they would find plenty of friends and enjoy themselves accordingly. -Though he would not say that everyone had a soft spot for the Army, yet he could extend, the visitors a very hearty welcome on behalf of the large section which recognised the value of the organisation." During the day the band gave several performances at various places, and this evening at 8 o 'clock a concert will be given at the Army citadel. To-morrow .three performances will be given, and oji Monday afternoon an open-air concert will be given at New Brighton.
