A NEW TRACTOR.
FOR-AGRICULTURAL TRANSPORT
There was on view yesterday at the works of Messrs Booth, Macdonald and Co. a tractor which introduces something new in the way of agricultural traction in New Zealand. It was a Universal Tractor, 18-20 b.h.p., built by Saunderson and Mills, Ltd., Bedford, England. The popularity of light agricultural tractors is increasing all the world over, and manufacturers have applied themselves to the task of producing a desirable machine. The machines are adopted for transport, ploughing, mowing, binding, threshing, grinding, sawing, pumping, etc. —in fact, for all the traction work of the farm. T,he fuel consumed is kerosene and it is claimed that in tests the most remarkable results have been achieved.
The model shown at Messrs Booth, Maedonald and Co.'s works was one which would suit the farmer as a light general purpose tractor for agriculture or transport. It is mounted on four steel-built wheels, the rear propelling wheels being 4ft diameter by 12in wide, and the front steering wheels 30in in diameter by 6in wide. The engine is a two-cylinder, with Sin bore by 7in stroke, and is water-cooled. The gear speeds are three forward, of approximately two, three, and six miles per hour, and three miles per hour reverse.
The machine appeared to be a very handy affair, easily handled, and adapted for use in many departments of farm work. The local agent is Mr E. 0. Smith, in conjunction with Messrs Booth, Maedonald and Co.
