COUNTY COUNCILS.
MALVERN. The Malvern County Council met on Tuesday last. It was decided to accept J. Walker's tender of 2/6 per chain for stone breaking on Beatty's Road.
It was decided to withdraw from the New Zealand Counties' Association, and to endeavour to form a similar association- for Canterbury, or the South Island, so securing a degree of identity of interests. it was decided to meet the Tawera County Council in order to frame bylaws. It was suggested that the Selwyn County Council might co-operate also.
A telegram was received from the Minister of Public Works stating that he was making further enquiries as to the action of the department in cutting down trees on the transmission line from Lake Coleridge. Permission was granted the department to' lay telephone wires under the roads of the county, provided the damage done was made good. An application was made with regard to workers' dwellings at Coalgate under the Counties Amendment Act, 1913. Untilmore, and suitable,; applications were made, it was decided not to take action in this matter.
With regard to future floods in the Kowai River and running shingle lessening the supply, it was decided in such cases to alternate the flow at Wad-, dingtori, so as to enable the lower end' of the district to get some water. Part of the Greendale district was reported to be short of water, owing to loss through sink holes. It was stated that a new race was apparently the only remedy for this, and it might be obtained if those interested would agree: as to the cost of the work.
