CHRISTCHURCH SPORTS CLUB. A meeting of the committee of the. Christchurch Sports Club was held last evening, when there were present : Messrs E. Nordon (chairman), F. A. Hornibrook, W. O. Ataek, T. E. Bobson, and'H.B. Gould (secretary); ' • Mr P. A. Hbrriibrtiok was appointed a judge for the University tournament on Monday, in place of Mr H. E. Marsh, who will hot be able to attend. . The New Zealand University Tournament granted permission to hold a special six rounds bout between W. Griffen and S. Manson at the University tournament on Easter Mon-, day evening. The committee > decided to match 5 -1* 1 : Upton with* the winner of the Griffen yi Manson contest next Monday, for a bout at the club's tournament on April 25. With regard to a proposal to match J. Hegarty (Timaru) and P. Cook (Christchurch) in a contest for the professional lightweight championship of New Zealand in Grand National race week, .intimation was received from Hegarty that he is willing tooneet Cook for a purse of £75. It will be pointed out to Hegarty that the purse for a championship contest is limited to £SO, under the rules of the New Zealand Boxing Council. Hegarty will be offered the same terms as for his match with Cook in Christchurch last year. An application was received from W. Bartlett (Christchurch) for a match with Bert Lowe (Gisborne) for the professional heavyweight championship of New Zealand. Bartlett will be informed that Barney Ireland (Waipawa) has first claim for such a match. It had been proposed that W. Ireland, an amateur lightweight who is a brother of Barney Ireland, should be matched with J. Digby, of Ashburton, for the club's tournament on April 25. Ireland telegraphed that he was willing, but Digby intimated that he could not accept the match on such short notice. Therefore Mr Hornibrook and the secretary were deputed to try to arrange a match between Ireland and N. Vernall, of Christchurch. Becently the club matched J. Thom-1 son and J. Penros%. both of Christ, church, for a professional lightweight contest on April but the match was afterwards declared off owing to the demands of Thomson and his backers. Last night the committee had before it a letter to which strong exception was taken, and it was decided to call upon Thomson to attend the next meeting of the committee, and show cause why he should not be disqualified for writing the letter.
