HEATING SCHOOLS.
EDUCATION BOARD ADOPTS REPORT. The Education Board of North Canterbury this morning received a report from the Building Committee as to the heating of schools, a matter which has been under' consideration for a considerable tinie., The Building Committee reported that it had held a meeting on March 31, conferring with the executive, of; the North Canterbury School Committees ' Association, to discuss the important question of the heating of schools. There were present —Messrs. Rennie (chairman), Adams, Andrews, Banks, Boyd, Jamieson, Opie, and Studholme, as representing the board, and Messrs Large, Franklin, and Butterfield, representing the association. During the conference it was stated that the slow combustion stove was now attracting much attention, and was considered to be six times as efficient as the open fireplace, being also suitable for temporary buildings, such as the board had erected in connection with several schools. The question was also raised as to whether the low pressure hot water system to be placed in the board's new schools could not be simplified and the expense reduced, so as to make it available for country schools, which at present consume a large amount of fuel with indifferent results. With regard to the ordinary stove and pipes, considered by some to be suitable, it was pointed out that many country schools were originally fitted with these, but proving unsatisfactory had since been removed in every ease. The board's architect had made a note of the suggestions, in order to simplify the "Ideal" system, and the information given by the representatives of the association would no doubt be of service to the board. The repoiifr was adopted without discussion.
