MEN ON THE ENGINE.
PROMPTITUDE REWARDED. THE SMITHFIELD ACCIDENT. When the passengers on the second express to Christchurch on the 31st ult. realised that the men on the engine, by their promptitude and watchfulness, had enormously minimised the effects of the accident, they contributed to a fund, with which were to be purchased some mementos of the event, to be presented to the driver and fireman. " The General Manager of Railways (Mr E. H. Hiley) willingly gave his permission for the presentation to be made. The presents have been purchased, and were on view to-day. The driver, Mr C. Harrington, will receive a silver afternoon tea set and silver tray, and the fireman, Mr C. Beaumont, will receive a similar presentation, with an oak tray. The presentations will be made on behalf; of the subscribers at 8 o'clock this evening, in the engineer's conference room.
