ELLESMERE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Ellesmere County Council, held at Leeston on Monday, was attended by Mr J. Storry (chairman) and Crs. J. C Free, J. Cunningham, T. O. Stephens, F. J. Lemon, and J. Lochead. Authority was received from the Government Resident Engineer to proceed with the Selwyn bridge repair work in accordance with the proposals submitted to him for subsidy—£4ooo grant, on £1 to £2 basis, £2OO now voted. The Government Engineer advised that 110 grant was available for Taumutu culvert, the £250 passed being for Cooper's culvert. The clerk reported having interviewed the engineer on the subject, and he was instructed to Avrite, pointing out that the two culverts were necessary, and that they were part of the drainage scheme. The Canterbury Land Board advised the council that the Minister of Lands had approved ot' the payment of £l5O towards the cost of repairing Taunuitu culvert. The clerk of the Paparua County Council informed the council of an election to be held the last week in this month to return a member to the Lytteltoii Harbour 'Board, to represent the combined districts. With regard to land drainage by-laws the council's solicitors suggested that a conference of county councils should be held to deal with the matter
