NOTHING DOING.
COUNCIL AND CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS.
At last night's meeting of the Sumner Borough Council a letter was read : from the Hon. Minister of Defence, inviting suggestions from the couneil in the matter of finding employment for and supervising those who claimed exemption from military training on the grounds of conscientious objections. "What the deuce can be done?" was Cr Barr's ejaculation. Continuing, Cr Barr said that he cordially agreed that some provision should be made for those whose conscience would not allow them to take part in military duties, but what were they to do with those who objected to working as an alternative. The Government should have outlined the whole scheme, the question of supervision was not part of the borough 's functions. -They had plenty of troubles of their own without taking a hand in supervising. They could find work, but it was impossible for them to supervise it. He moved that a reply be sent that the council had no scheme -C' to suggest, but that work could be found in the borough. The motion was carried.
