FOOTBALL SOCIAL.
OHRISTCHUECH UNITED CLUB. The above club held an "opening of the season" social and dance at Ridgley Hall on Saturday evening, when a large number attended. The president, Mr F. C. Eastgate, in declaring the function open, drew attention to the growth of the Association game, which he said was a scientific one and was becoming a serious rival to the more robust sport of Bugby He remarked on the good-fellowship existing among members, and stated that for a new club they seemed to *e in a very healthy condition. Mr T. H. Swaly, club captain, commented on the excellent support received from the president in helping the club oyer many obstacles, including finance. He was quite satisfied with the progress of the club. The secretary, Mr E. J. Hawkings, also spoke a few words, mentioning that the president had offered a gold medal for presentation to the . member who took the greatest interest in the club during the ensuing season. A few musical items were then rendered, after which the floor was cleared for dancing.
