MAYORALTY OF RICCARTON.
MR J. T. BROWN TO STAND. An influential deputation 50 strong waited on Mr J. T. Brown last evening, asking him to allow himself to be nominated for the mayoralty of Riccarton. The present Mayor, Mr J. Reynolds, who is not seeking re-election, intro-. duced the deputation. He stated that the council wanted at its head someone possessing Mr Brown's capacity and knowledge, and hoped the deputation would receive a favourable answer before they withdrew. Cr Helliweir said the council had lately been in deep water and wanted as Mayor a man who could handle matters in a proper and business-like manner. I ■' r. . Cr Ford mentioned that Mr . Brown had considerable experience in municipal matters, having been for some years on the Sydenham Borough Council, while the > deputation bore testimony as to the popularity and respect' in which he was held by the ratepayers. Messrs J. Munnings, sen., A Hampton, J. Gudsell, and others spoke in support of the previous speakers.. Mr Brown, in returning thanks, said he was greatly honoured by the representative deputation. .He had for many years held various position on local bodies, but in the recent past it had been his inclination to lead a more retired life. As the residents were so anxious to enlist his services, however, he did not see how he could refuse them, and consented to stand.for the mayoralty, thanking them heartily for the honour conferred upon him.
