H.M.S. PHILOMEL.
Press Association. AUCKLAND, April 2. The Minister for Defence, the Hon James Alleii, states that it is probable that the Government will be in a posi tion to take over the cruiser Philomel which is to be used as the Dominior training ship, from the Imperial Gov ernment in about three months' time As soon as the new commander of the Philomel (whose appointment has not yet been announced by the Admiralty) arrives in New Zealand those who desire to take up a course oi training will be informed. The com mander of the Philomel will act as naval adviser to the New Zealand Government. The method of training foi those who desire to join as midshipmen will probably include a course at the Australian Naval College. The presenl means of entering the Royal Navy wil be continued. The provision for cadet ships at Osborne and Dartmouth foi New Zealanders will also be continued Mr Allen emphasises the , fact thai the expenditure upon the Philomel wil not be an increase to the yearly de fence bill, as the amount so expendec will be deducted from the annual sub sidy paid to the Admiralty. Mr Allen, questioned, said that hi had nothing to add regarding the Gov ernment's naval policy beyond wha the Prime Minister had already state( in recent speeches. He (Mr Allen would deal with the question in thi course of speeches in his constituency during the present month.
