One would suppose that it is an easy matter to describe on which side a cow is branded, but the question proved a veritable trap for witnesses in a case at a North Island Magistrate's Court recently. One witness said the brand was on the "near" side, and when asked to explain said that if one were looking at the cow from the near end the brand would be on the left. Another witness said the brand was on the milking side, and that if one were looking at the brand the cow's tail would be on the right and,its head on the left. Still another explained graphically that when looking into the cow's face the brand was on the right hand side rump. The court was perhaps a trifle confused over these many descriptions, and seized the lirst opportunity to go and inspect the cow for itself.
